There’s a sense on social media and in the news about 2017: don’t let the door hit you on the way out. While it was an amazing year for many people, it seems it was a particularly trying year for many more.

As 2018 is now underway, it’s time for a welcome fresh start. And that’s the case for more than our waistlines and pocketbooks. Business plans and budgets and career goals are reset and the day is now to make a change for the better.

So how are you going to make this the best year ever for your business?

Here are a few things to try:

  1. Stay informed: More than ever before, knowledge is power. Staying informed about topics like the new tax law, sexual harassment issues, and minimum wage increases empower you as a small business owner. A recent article on ABC News listed these topics as things all “small business owners should know or do” this year. The impact on your business may not be significant, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. Be an advocate, not only for your employees but for yourself and the future of your business.
  2. Use the tools you have available: Chances are there is an easier way to do almost anything you do as part of your small business. Some of that is doable through the constant evolution of technology. New apps are available so often it can be tough to keep up and know what’s best for your business. Make a point to try something new on a schedule that works for you (quarterly, monthly, weekly). But don’t shy away from trusted and reliable resources, like Expensify, Slack, QuickBooks, Evernote, and Square.
  3. Clean up the clutter: In a world where most people would rather get a quick text or instant message than a phone call or email, it’s more important than ever to keep your inbox organized. Try using one of many of the available apps to keep your inbox free of clutter, but also schedule the time to maintain it so things don’t pile up.
  4. Delegate more: We know it’s tough. Your business is your baby, so it’s hard sometimes to hand off projects and tasks you think you can do best. The reality is you can’t do it all, despite even your best efforts. Nor should you! So how do you find ways to outsource your business? A good place to start is considering what you enjoy most about your business. Focus on that. Spend your time doing what you love and let someone else do the rest. Anything that doesn’t bring you joy should go. Content marketing, accounting, payroll and administrative tasks are all among tasks to consider outsourcing. That way you can do what you love and get your Fridays back.
